Here’s how you can title a UTV across the 17 states, according to the DMV.

1. California

All vehicles in California, including UTVs, must be registered and titled. In order to get the process started, visit the local DMV office and ask for Form REG 343.

You’ll also need to provide a bill of sale, have the vehicle verified by a DMV representative, and pay a fee of $52.

2. Idaho

After registering your UTV in Idaho, you must title it. There’s a $14 title fee plus 6% of your vehicle’s price (sales tax). Visit the Idaho DMV office to get the process started.

3. Iowa

Registering and titling your vehicle in Iowa are two different processes. You don’t have to title your UTV when you register it, but you must title it within 45 days of purchase (30 days if purchased from a private seller)

The fee to title your UTV is $11.50.

4. Kentucky

Kentucky is one of the few states that don’t require you to register your UTV. However, you must title them.

The DMV doesn’t outline the exact procedures nor fees online. It’s best to visit the DMV office to get it titled.

5. Michigan

Same as Kentucky, Michigan requires UTV owners to title their vehicle, with no need for titling.

Titling your UTV is the same as titling your car. Check the guidelines for titling your vehicle on the DMV website.

6. Missouri

You must title your UTV in Missouri. If you don’t title your vehicle within 30 days of purchase, you’ll be fined.

Fill in Form DOR-108, which is the application for titling and licensing. The title fee is $8.50 and $10.25 for registration. There’s also a processing fee of $6.

The form is available on the DNCR website, and your dealer will handle your application.

15. Washington

The state requires you to register and title your UTV within 15 days of purchase. According to the DMZ, if you’re late, you’ll be fined.

However, if you only intend to ride the UTV on private lands, you don’t even need to notify the DMZ about the vehicle.

To register and title your vehicle, head to the local DMZ office and complete a Form TD-420-003. You must present a bill of sale or certificate of origin from the manufacturer.

Then, you’ll have your vehicle inspected. Once it passes, you’ll receive an inspection receipt that you’ll present to receive the title.

16. West Virginia

As of February 4, 2020, you can now drive your UTV on public roads by making them “Street Legal.” You must title your UTV to do so. Visit the local DMV office with the notarized bill of sale or statement of origin.

The fees are $15 for the title, but there’s also an extra $10 if there’s a lien on the UTV. Finally, you must pay 6% of the vehicle’s price as taxes.

Remember, there are still a lot of rules regarding riding on public roads, even if the UTV is street legal. You’re also not permitted to drive on interstate highways or first-class highways.

Contact your local DMV office for more info.

Closing Thoughts

If your state doesn’t require titling your UTV, we still highly recommend that you do it.

Moving from state to state can place restrictions on your ability to sell your vehicle. A lot of states require title certificates to transfer ownership.
