Sauna vs. Hot Tub: What’s Best for You?

Saunas vs hot tubs, are they the same, are they different, what is worse, what is better? These are questions people often ask themselves when considering investing in either one. There are a few similarities between the two, and naturally some differences. So, consider what we have listed below to help you come to a final decision!

Similarities Between Saunas and Hot Tubs

Both saunas and hot tubs provide heat, this is probably one of their biggest similarities. Because of the provision of heat to the body, both saunas and hot tubs can be very therapeutic. Saunas and hot tubs can also provide healing and rehabilitation for many, alleviating sore muscles or other pains.

In these heated spaces one can relax and let go of any stress placed on the body. And regarding the effects of stress, both Saunas and hot tubs can be very beneficial. If you have symptoms of stress, that can begin to take a toll on your mind and body.

In Dr. Lawrence Wilson’s book, “Sauna Therapy for Detoxification and Healing, using a sauna regularly can lower the levels of cortisol, which is the body’s main stress hormone.  Sweating more can actually increase your relaxation and lower the feeling of stress or frustration.

According to Dr. Bruce Becker, “An individual’s autonomic nervous system helps him or her adapt to changes in the environment. And it affects such vital functions as heart rate, digestion, respiration, salivation, circulation, and even sexual arousal. While in a constant state of flux, its two subsystems – the sympathetic nervous system (which escalates under stress) and the parasympathetic nervous system (which promotes calm) – fall into balance when the body is immersed in warm water”.

As you can tell, both saunas and hot tubs are great ways and places to relax. You can either use them privately for some quality alone time or use them to spend time with friends and family. It is up to you!

Differences Between Saunas and Hot Tubs

While both saunas and hot tubs provide similar benefits, there are still some differences. For one, there is the overall look of both saunas and hot tubs. They are both completely different and generally host two different aesthetics.

Yes, they both feel relaxing and possibly luxurious, but the experience in a sauna is going to be different than the experience in a hot tub. Also, the installation and maintenance of saunas and hot tubs are completely different as listed below.

Saunas:

  • You have a choice between Steam Saunas and Infrared Saunas. Steam saunas use heated moisture to warm the air, while Infrared saunas use infrared light to warm your body directly.
  • You can have either a portable or sedentary sauna. They are generally larger than hot tubs.
  • Bought either prefabricated or already constructed. The area you place the sauna must have a means of allowing moisture to escape so that you do not grow mold. You need the room to have enough ventilation, especially if you are looking to have an indoor sauna.
  • Keep your Sauna clean! Clean the interior after every use. Hose down and sand the interior of the sauna to remove any dirt and grime. If you choose to have an exterior sauna, then you may need to pressure wash it every once in a while.

Hot Tubs:

  • Setting up a hot tub is very easy. It requires less space than a sauna, just be sure to be close to a power outlet and a water source.
  • Make sure that where you place the hot tub is level and sturdy to support the weight of the unit, water, and the people who will be using it. You do not want to damage your house!
  • Hot tubs are easier to clean and maintain than saunas. You need to be able to test the water once a week, purchase the necessary chemicals to keep your water germ free and clean the hot tub’s filters once a month.

Further Differences:

Saunas are known for being calm and tranquil spaces. They are usually used alone or shared with couples. Saunas are not the kind of areas for large parties or the family.

Hot tubs, on the other hand, is a great place for everyone to unwind together. I had an outdoor hot tub/jacuzzi once that was attached to my pool. It was perfect for when I had friends over or pool parties. I also enjoyed it on my own as a way to relax after coming home from a long day at school.

What Should You Choose?

After a long day of work, all you want to do is unwind and decompress. Or maybe you have specific days dedicated to self-care and are in need of a place to take your routine to an even more relaxing level. Regardless of what you choose, a sauna or hot tub, you will find yourself melting any stress away. There are a few things to consider. If you are lacking in space, then maybe an outdoor hot tub would be a great fit for you! You can enjoy the hot tub under the stars, or even share it with some friends. There are also a lot of hot tub designs out there to match your personal aesthetic just right!

Homes or yards with a lot of space can be a great fit for a sauna if your budget is right. They do require much more maintenance than hot tubs and their installation is more tedious. However, they do provide a more luxurious feel. And if you are looking for a more quiet place to decompress, a sauna would meet that need. You can either set your week off to a great start or end it with time spent in the sauna, whatever works best for you!

I hope this helps you find out if a sauna or a hot tub would fit you and your space best!
